Bourbon Chicken Recipe

Something quite interesting about Bourbon Chicken is that most of us don’t know the origin of this particular dish. It is named after the famous Bourbon street in New Orleans, Louisiana, specifically a Chinese Restaurant on this street which was the first to incorporate Bourbon whisky into Chinese cooking.

Along with some also state that it was the Bourbon whisky which is the main reason behind such a name for the dish. Moving on to the main topic which is our easy authentic and best Bourbon Chicken which is surely going to make you crave this dish every day. 

Ingredients

One and a half pound boneless chicken thighs, two tablespoons of cornstarch divided into two bowls equally, one-third cup of minced white onion, 4-5 cloves of garlic(finely chopped), one teaspoon of grated Ginger, 3 tablespoons of packed brown sugar, two Green onions thinly sliced, two cups of cooked rice, one tablespoon of cider vinegar, 1/3 cup of reduced-sodium soy sauce, one-third cup of reduced-sodium chicken broth, and finally 1/4th cup of Bourbon whisky(however if you want to make it children friendly or just find an alternative bourbon whiskey, you can go for apple juice)

Step 1

The first step is going to be taking your boneless chicken thighs, and cleaning them up very properly, then you will be using your butcher knife, to cut them into small 1-inch pieces, you can hammer the chicken thighs a bit before making the pieces, which will make the chicken more tender. Finally, you will pat them dry and keep them aside. 

Step 2

The second step will be to add your cornstarch powder to your chicken pieces in a large bowl and toss them very well until almost every piece of chicken is quite moderately coated in the cornstarch Powder. You won’t be keeping this aside for very long, because otherwise, the corn starch layering will get very soggy and not give the proper texture. 

Step 3

In a nonstick pan or iron Skillet, you will add about 1 to 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, heat the Pan very well over medium-high heat, and then you will be adding in your chicken pieces all at a time. Slowly try them while giving them a steady toss once in a while so that the chicken pieces don’t get stuck to the pan or each other. You will fry them until the chicken pieces get a little bit browned, and then keep them aside on a different plate.

Step 4

Now this is going to be a very important step, many people may directly add the sauces into oil and try to reduce it, but we will do it separately. In a small medium-sized bowl, you will be adding in your soy sauce, chicken broth, brown sugar, cider vinegar, and crushed dry red peppers, and stir it. Finally, in the mixture, we will add our cornstarch powder, and mix it very well, making sure that there are no lumps in the mixture. 

Step 5

Now in the same pan, which was used to fry the chicken, you will be heating 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, heat it up a bit and finally add in your ginger as well as garlic. Sauté it well, until and unless it starts getting slightly golden, and finally add in your liquid mixture, on low heat keep stirring well, until the sauce thickens, and finally add in your chicken. Mix it well, top it with green onions, and it is all ready to be served with your rice.
