You can never go wrong with these yummy, savory and crispy spring rolls. When in China, you surely cannot miss out on Lumpia and sweet chili sauce. You will literally find this tasty snack treat in each and every local corner of East and Southeast Asia. But guess what, these crispy spring rolls, aka, Lumpia can also be made at home. Invention of Lumpia – All About The Local Delicacy Of China! 

  • Origin – Going back to the 19th century, if we are not wrong Lumpia was first invented in China. As per our records, it was the Chinese settlers of Fujian origin who mainly introduced this tasty finger food to the locals of the Dutch East Indies! 
  • Inspiration – Many do think that Lumpia wrappers are directly inspired by Fujianese rùnbǐng and Teochew popiah, popular spring rolls of Indonesia and the Philippines! 
  • Popularity – There is no doubt in the fact that Lumpia wrappers are highly loved by the locals of the Southeast countries. Sources further confirmed that these crunchy spring rolls are also quite famous in and around the United States, especially in the Netherlands.

Lumpia Ingredients 

  • Vegetable Oil for Cooking 
  • 8-10 Lumpia wrappers
  • 8-10 Shrimp pieces 
  • ½ pound Ground pork 
  • 1 whole cabbage
  • 2-3 carrots
  • 1-2 onions
  • 1-2 tbsp soy sauce 
  • 5-6 garlic cloves
  • ½ Ginger
  • 1-2 green onions
  • 1 egg
  • Salt & pepper as per taste 

Lumpia Recipe Guide – Steps To Follow! 

Step 1 

Before we move on to the cooking process, let us first do some prep for our veggies. In a food processor, add onions, cabbage, carrots, green onions, garlic and ginger! Blend all the veggies on medium to low speed. 

Step 2 

We are using a food processor here to blend all the veggies! This ensures all the veggies are of the same size. This also speeds up the cooking process. But if you want you can also chop up the veggies and pan-sear them. 

Step 3

Now, clean your shrimps properly and dice them up into small pieces. Keep it aside in a medium-sized bowl and later combine it with ground pork! Wear gloves and simply use your hands for this process. 

Step 4

Next, heat up a pan and pour in some vegetable oil. Keep the flame on low and add the mix of veggies. Let this cook in the pan for a few minutes. Here, we want the veggies to shrink a bit in size! Definitely keep an eye on the pan, as we are not looking for a charred taste in our Lumpias. 

Step 5 

Once the veggies have become soft, add soy sauce and give it all a good mix. If you want, here you can also use a mix of soy sauce and fish sauce. Next, add the mash of shrimp and ground pork in the pan. Sauté it for a while and let it cook properly. 

Step 6

Season your Lumpia mix with a generous amount of salt and pepper. Once everything is cooked evenly, you can turn off the heat and move on to assemble the Lumpia wrappers. Let this filling of veggies, shrimp and pork cool down for a while. 

Step 7

We suggest using Homemade Lumpia wrappers for an elevated taste. You can also use Spring roll sheets here. On a flat surface, lay down your wrappers. Keep some space on the side and line up the Lumpia filling with a spoon. Make small spring rolls and seal them up with a generous brush of egg wash. 

Step 8 

Lastly, in a large pot, heat up some oil and deep fry your Lumpia wrappers until crispy and golden. Make sure the oil temperature is right and your spring rolls are sealed properly. Serve these alongside some tasty sweet chili sauce
