Invention Of Japanese Hayashi Rice
- Origin – Hayashi Rice originated in Japan, but it goes without saying that this yummy beef dish has a touch of the Western side as well. Among the various origin stories, a few people do say that it was Yuteki Hayashi who invented this dish.
- Inspiration – Yuteki Hayashi happens to be the very first president of the popular publishing company Maruzen! People say that his employees used to study until late at night and thus, one sudden day the president made this dish for them. While other theories believe that Hayashi rice is somehow connected to the recipe for “hashed beef”.
- Popularity – Hayashi rice is quite popular in and around Japan. Because of the simplicity of this beef stew, it can be prepared very quickly. Nowadays, because of the readymade curry blocks available in the market, you can also prepare this dish with only three to four ingredients. It is indeed true that this dish can easily be found in anyone’s lunch box in Japan.

- Oil for cooking
- Rice
- 300g of Beef Slices
- Canned Tomatoes
- 1 Onion
- 4 cubes of Japanese curry block
- Enoki Mushrooms
- 1 cube of butter
- Salt and pepper as per taste
Hayashi Rice Recipe Guide – Steps To Follow
Step 1
For this yummy Hayashi Rice recipe, we will be using both canned tomatoes and the popular Japanese curry blocks. If you want, you can also prepare this curry with only tomatoes. Firstly, wash and prepare your rice and let it steam until properly cooked. You can also use the rice cooker for this process.
Step 2
Moving on to the beef curry, in a pot, drizzle some oil, add sliced onions and sauté for a while. Then drop in the beef slices, at this point, you can also season it with some salt and pepper. Don’t add too much seasoning!
Step 3
Once those juicy beef slices have changed their color, you can add some water to the pot and later add the canned tomatoes. Give everything a good mix and let this simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes. If you want, you can also make this dish in the pressure cooker, it will ensure the beef slices are cooked properly.
Step 4
Next, add the curry block to the pot and once the paste has melted, use the spatula to mix everything together. Remember, the demi-glaze happens to be the very base of this whole dish. In case you don’t want to use canned tomatoes, you can also use fresh tomato puree and ketchup for this dish.

Last but not least, add the enoki mushrooms and let this boil for a few more minutes until the mushrooms are properly cooked and soft. Do not forget to add in the butter cube, this will give a natural touch of luscious shine to your whole beef dish.
