- Origin – As per the information gathered by us, “pa” in Korean literally means scallion! Originated in Korea itself, these savory pancakes are somehow based on the recipe of jeon. Traditionally, Korean Pajeon was made without any meat or seafood and thus we can say with certainty that the original recipe is 100 percent vegan and vegetarian.
- Inspiration – As per our research, we do think that the recipe for Pajeon is inspired by the recipe for Chinese scallion pancakes. But again, we cannot completely sideline the difference between the two. Speaking specifically of the pajeon recipe, it is usually made out of a liquid batter!
- Popularity – Savory, chewy and crispy, when in Korea, you surely cannot miss out on these Korean pancakes. Pajeon is very famous in many Asian countries out there. Loved by the locals, these super easy and delicious pancakes are generally enjoyed with a yummy soy sauce dip in Korea.
We have tried to keep this Pajeon recipe as authentic as possible. Whether you are a vegan or vegetarian, you can easily try out this recipe at home. Some people also add eggs and a tablespoon or two of kimchi to their Pajeon batter. But we haven’t used these ingredients here! In case you are using Kimchi, make sure to check whether it is vegan or not. Again, if you want, you can also add any protein of your choice into the batter mix of these savory Korean pancakes.

- Vegetable oil for cooking
- ¼ cup of all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup of rice flour
- 1 Onion, sliced
- ½ tsp of sugar
- 3-4 fresh scallions, chopped
- 1 tsp of soy sauce
- 1 tsp of soy bean paste
- ½ cup of water
- Salt and pepper as per taste
A Complete Guide To Pajeon Recipe – Steps To Follow
Step 1
To begin this recipe, firstly prepare your batter for Korean pajeon. In a bowl, add a quarter cup of each all-purpose flour and rice flour. If you want, instead of rice flour, you can also use potato starch here.
Step 2
Next, add the measured quantity of soy sauce, soybean paste, water and sugar to the body. With the help of a spatula or a whisk, mix everything together. Ensure that there are no lumps present in your Pajeon batter.
Step 3
Now, it’s time to add the sliced onion and chopped scallions to the bowl. With a spatula, properly combine these within the flour batter. Don’t forget to season your savory pancake batter with some salt and pepper.
Step 4
Moving ahead to the cooking process, drizzle some vegetable oil on a pan. Keep the flame between low to medium, once the pan is hot enough, pour in the Pajeon batter. Let it cook properly from one side and only then flip it over to the other side.
Step 5
Some people also put in the battered scallions and onions first and then drizzle the flour mix on top of it! Enjoy your crispy and savory Korean pancakes with a spicy and flavorful soy sauce dip on the side.
