Homemade Elderberry Syrup: A Step-by-step Guide To The Recipe

Step – 1

First, you will have to prepare our Elderberries properly before putting them to use for the syrup. Wash the berries with clean water and put them on a clean soft to absorb excess water. Take a fork, and carefully destalk the berries from their stalks. Remove the stem completely from the berries and set them aside.

Step – 2

Next, pour all the berries into a medium sized saucepan and pour cold water into it. Submerge the berries with about 1 to 1.5 cm water, not more than that level. Before turning on the heat, slice gingers and add them into the water with the berries. Add the clove and start boiling this at a medium heat. High heat can damage the aromatic property of these ingredients pretty quickly.

Step – 3

Once the primary mixture of the Elderberry Syrup comes to a boil, turn the heat down. Let this simmer gently for about 16 to 20 minutes. Remove the lid carefully after 2 minutes. Take a clean spoon and dip it into the mixture to make sure all the Elderberries are extremely soft. Soon, they will start dissolving into a much clearer liquid.

Step – 4

Let the liquid cool for some minutes. Take a fine sieve and start straining the liquid of Elderberry Syrup. Afterwards, we will add sugar to this liquid, but first, you need to measure this properly. 500 ml of this liquid needs 400 gm of Granulated White Sugar. Add granulated White Sugar with a spoon and whisk the entire vigorously for mixing it well.

Step – 5

Once you are done, pour in the sugary syrup back into the saucepan. Tip in the fresh Lemon Juice and wait till you can see bubbles coming out. When it happens, let it simmer for 10 to 12 minutes so that no sugar lumps are left behind. Let it cool and keep the cold syrup in glass bottles. Let it freeze for at least 24 hours, and your Elderberry Syrup is ready.
